Dungeon taunts you from the beginning, suggesting that certain death will come to you from starting the game. This is for good reason, what awaits is one of the most challenging platformers I have played in recent years. Created by Arthur "Podunkian" Lee and Jonatan "cactus" Soderstrom, Dungeon was built for the Ludum Dare Compeition which pits developers against each other to make a game from scratch within 48hrs. Featuring some great early 80's graphics and a soundtrack to match you are on the tail of an assassin and must traverse the perils of a retro castle to apprehend the treasonus dog. On your travels you'll avoid what I'm guessing is lava, floating tadpoles, pitfalls and many spikes. Oh the spikes! I will not be surprised if in a few years time these red triangles of doom appear on a top 10 list of 'Gaming's Hardest Obstacles'. Spikes aside, Dungeon is one of those games that is as addictive as it is hard. Sure you may rage quit, possibly throwing a keyboard or gamepad to the floor, but within 2 seconds of doing so you will be hitting return to start it all again.
The gameplay is very reminiscent of the original Prince of Persia if it were made for the Atari 2600, once you have memorised a section of the game you can quite easiy speed run it. Though the game seems hard to begin with through much death, you quickly learn what's required of a level. If anyone has gotten past 'The Dagger' let me know! 3/5 - Good You can grab Dungeon from here |
