If I could choose only two words to describe Continuity they would be ‘ingenious’ and ‘diabolical’.
This game is a mix up of light platforming and insane puzzle solving the likes of which you’ll probably never have seen before, the minds that went into designing this game could easily find a career in creating evil lairs for super villains, the levels in this game feature such ingenuity that comes off nothing short of amazing...
So just encase you didn’t realise I think Continuity is pretty good, pretty good indeed. The games premise is platforming simplicity, collect all the keys and reach the door to advance, the trick is most of these keys and doors are inaccessible unless you work out the correct pathway in the sliding puzzle over world set up. There are 32 levels in all some range from incredibly simple to soul-crushingly, time-sappingly difficult, admittedly I’m not a big puzzle game player but I spent hours, literally hours on one level until I finally cracked it, even employing a helping hand for the last two levels just so I could complete the game in a healthy amount of time. This is a testament to Continuity’s difficulty as much as it is to its rewarding nature on completing a level. I never once felt the game was impossible, only that the solution hadn’t presented its self yet and when I did finish the puzzle I felt like a genius, a stone cold puzzle solving genius. I can only imagine it’s what winning Countdown feels like. If you do it 32 times consecutively.
The music in the game suits it nicely to start with, in the sliding puzzle over world a heavenly, waiting room like tune loops round and round while in platforming section a jaggy, action beat busts out. It's all good at the start but after awhile of frustrating stagnation in my puzzle solving flow I not stand to hear another second of the music. Thankfully though game does come with a mute feature which allowed me to open up Spotify and listen to whatever I pleased as I sat working my mind so hard I probably violated several human rights laws. This did lead to the discovery though that death metal is not conducive to puzzle solving, the switch between Ingested’s “Intercranial Semen Injection” to Django Reinhardt’s “Boogie Woogie Part 12” did lead in a large spike in productivity.
The only niggling thing about the game that bothered me is the blandness of your controlling character, he’s a stick figure and placing a stick figure in a game on the Internet is like placing a guy with brown hair and stylish stubble in a modern mainstream action game. The avatar works for it’s purpose though, minimalist black and white backgrounds and design add a stylishness to it with the games character being far more about its levels than anything these.
I only make that criticism because it reminds me so much of an other game that stinks of character, that is Portal. If you want to get into hyperbole you could say Continuity is a 2D Portal though I feel that would be an over doing it. That being said with more levels, a little more in character design and more varied music I could easily see Continuity making a great purchase on the IPhone or even the Nintendo DS. I can not sing Continuity's praises enough though, it’s definitely worth your attention and if the minds behind this go on to make future games they will be something special to look forward to.
